How to Help Migrant Children

One of the most pressing issues in the world right now is the fate of migrant children at the southern border of the United States. Thousands of children have traveled great distances to try to escape problems in their home countries, including violence, poverty, and climate disaster. Furthermore, many of these children are unaccompanied, with no way of interacting with family members, and are currently being detained.

Around the world, there are millions more displaced migrant children seeking safety. Those who have fled their homes on their own face an increased risk of dangers like violence, labor exploitation, forced marriage, abuse, and sexual exploitation.

Here are some of the ways that you can make a difference and help migrant children.

  • Understand the Circumstances – One of the most important things you can do to help migrant children is to understand the circumstances that have led to their current situation. While there are often specific events that lead to children being displaced —like wars and famine—there are also solvable, underlying issues, such as poverty and access to basic necessities. Knowing what issues are leading to the displacement of migrant children allows you to take action.
  • Advocate for Migrant Children – Another measure you can take to help migrant children is to call your representatives and demand immediate action. This is especially important when the issues are going on in your own country, as is the case with the migrant children at the southern border of the United States. U.S. citizens should advocate for the rights and protection of these children at the local, state, and federal levels of government.
  • Become a Foster Parent – If you really want to make a difference, consider becoming a foster parent for a migrant child. Since these children are often unaccompanied, they need individuals who are willing to take them in, give them a safe place to live, and care for them until they are able to reunite with their parents or be adopted by a loving family.
  • Support Organizations Working Toward Change – Another great way to help migrant children is by supporting organizations that aim to help them and are working toward change. You can support these organizations by volunteering, raising awareness, and making donations to help fund their missions.

The International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) advocates for the rights of all uprooted people, including migrant children. Together with our partner agencies, we are working on reunification efforts to connect migrant children with their families, as well as attempting to change governmental policies around the world to protect the rights of migrant children. Our Child Safeguarding Policy emphasizes our commitment to the children we serve, promoting their best interests and rights in accordance with international standards. We are also working to eliminate underlying issues like poverty by protecting labor rights and improving working conditions for vulnerable communities.
