Bangladesh: Empowering Rohingya refugees to fight human trafficking
Since 2025, ICMC has supported Caritas Bangladesh to fight human trafficking by empowering Rohingya refugee communities living in camps.
Trafficking is a global phenomenon officially affecting more than 125,000 identified victims around the world, although the true number is likely to be significantly higher.
Just under 1.2 million Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution in Myanmar are living in camps in Bangladesh, 78% (936,000) of whom are women and children. Amongst the multiple protection risks they face, human trafficking remains a significant protection concern, particularly for women and girls.
ICMC support has enabled Caritas Bangladesh to train community volunteers to conduct household visits to 2,126 Rohingya refugee family members in 424 at-risk households. A structured trafficking awareness session for the wider Rohingya refugee community developed by Caritas Bangladesh has additionally reached 160 Rohingya refugees, including 120 adults and 40 children/young people.
