Mauritania: Livelihoods & protection for vulnerable youth

In 2025, ICMC supported our partner Caritas Mauritania to build the capacity, skills and resilience of vulnerable local and migrant youth.

Approximately 60% of Mauritania’s 4.9 million strong population are aged 25 or younger, with high levels of youth unemployment present throughout the country. In the capital city of Nouakchott, outlying districts are home to a growing population of vulnerable young people, who face significant challenges in relation to security, poverty, and social exclusion, and a lack of educational and personal development opportunities.

In 2025, ICMC support enabled Caritas Mauritania to address these challenges by providing training, protection, and support for Mauritanian and migrant youth in these districts.

40 Mauritanian and migrant youth in the city of Nouakchott accessed vocational training and professional work placements. 24 young men and women aged 16 and above successfully completed a culinary arts and pastry skills training program, while 16 completed building and electrical work training. Both programs included job kits and professional internships with local companies, and culminated in final exams and the presentation of professional diplomas.

Quote "Migrants arriving in Mauritania are very often young and without formal qualifications. Vocational training is essential for their integration, and ICMC's support has been crucial in enabling us to provide these opportunities to those most in need."
Quote "Alongside training and professional integration, the project fostered the individual motivation and engagement of the young people involved, and ensured their wider integration into the socioeconomic fabric of our community"
Quote "Children's rights and child protection are crucial issues in Mauritania, and many organizations have limited knowledge and lack the tools to implement protection mechanisms. ICMC's intervention has enabled us to raise awareness amongst opinion leaders, religious figures, and community leaders"
Quote "With ICMC's support, we were able to address two of the most vulnerable segments of the population in Mauritania: migrants and children. We have also created a platform for new collaboration and approaches in the future"
