Mauritania: Livelihoods & protection for vulnerable youth
In 2025, ICMC supported our partner Caritas Mauritania to build the capacity, skills and resilience of vulnerable local and migrant youth.

Approximately 60% of Mauritania’s 4.9 million strong population are aged 25 or younger, with high levels of youth unemployment present throughout the country. In the capital city of Nouakchott, outlying districts are home to a growing population of vulnerable young people, who face significant challenges in relation to security, poverty, and social exclusion, and a lack of educational and personal development opportunities.
In 2025, ICMC support enabled Caritas Mauritania to address these challenges by providing training, protection, and support for Mauritanian and migrant youth in these districts.
40 Mauritanian and migrant youth in the city of Nouakchott accessed vocational training and professional work placements. 24 young men and women aged 16 and above successfully completed a culinary arts and pastry skills training program, while 16 completed building and electrical work training. Both programs included job kits and professional internships with local companies, and culminated in final exams and the presentation of professional diplomas.
