The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity was awarded to Mr. Kyaw Hla Aung on 10 June 2018. A lawyer and activist for equality, education and human rights for the Rohingya people in Myanmar, Mr. Aung chose the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) as one of the recipients of the USD 1 million award.
To commemorate World Refugee Day on 20 June 2016, the International Catholic Migration Commission is launching a public call to share messages and stories of support and solidarity towards refugees worldwide. With more than 60 million people fleeing violence, conflicts or persecutions, a lack of legal channels to allow people to migrate safely, there is an urgent need to support refugees.
ICMC joins other humanitarian organizations in calling for urgent support for the 11.5 million people affected – including thousands feared dead – since super typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines last week. The tropical typhoon is the most powerful of currently active typhoons in the world and is the third to strike the country in three years; it came only a month after a deadly 7.2-magnitude earthquake.
