Civil Society Action Committee Releases Joint Statement Ahead of UN Migration Summit

On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the adoption of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the self-organized civil society Action Committee in New York City releases today a joint statement urging governments to step up to cooperate on responsibility-sharing solutions rather than existing commitments.
Ahead of the UN General Assembly’s Summit on Refugees and Migrants to be held on 19 September, the Action Committee – which gathers 22 non-governmental organizations working on migration issues and is coordinated by ICMC – hopes for governments to agree on an outcome document “delivering vital changes” for the lives of more than 20 million people forcibly on the move.
“The Summit is a chance for the world to find effective and lasting solutions”, the statement reads. “This week, negotiations for the Summit outcome documents are taking place and world leaders must seize this unique opportunity to show principled leadership and agree an outcome document worthy of this cause”.
