ICMC Deployment of Experts

Aisha is an expert in protecting children. She identifies children put at risk because of humanitarian crises and recommends measures to better protect them. Peter is an expert in determining whether asylum-seekers can be granted refugee status. He interviews them and evaluates their claims in light of international law.

Aisha and Peter are members of a roster of nearly 500 protection experts identified by the International Catholic Migration Commission, ICMC. At the request of ICMC’s partners, highly qualified experts like Aisha and Peter are deployed to countries where people who fled war and persecution have found refuge.

For instance, Peter left his home in Sweden and is currently in Mexico, where he works with the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR. When vulnerable refugees can neither safely return home nor stay in the country where they have found refuge, Peter refers them for resettlement to third countries. Aisha has just been deployed from her home in Kenya to Tunisia, where she joined the staff of UNICEF, the United Nations agency for Children. She and her colleagues there work with refugees in neighboring Libya. Aisha is currently doing “best interest determinations” — that is, identifying the best among several possible solutions for children on a case-by-case basis. She also works with survivors of sexual- and gender-based violence.

At any given time, Aisha, Peter, and other ICMC experts protect refugees and forcibly displaced people in dozens of countries around the world. Please take a look at how ICMC helps migrants and refugees and consider donating to ICMC.
