Thirteen people (of Christian and Muslim faith) have recently made their home in Vatican City. Besides providing adequate housing, the Vatican will also offer the families economic support and help them in the process of integration through Italian language classes.

The refugees hosted in the Vatican could safely travel to Italy thanks to the humanitarian corridors promoted by the Community of Sant’Egidio, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy and the Waldesian Table. The project, which provides Syrian refugees with legal entry and the possibility to apply for asylum in Italy, goes hand in hand with Pope Francis’ call for European parishes to welcome a refugee family during the Angelus on 6 September 2015.
