US Catholic Bishops Advocate for Migrants’ Rights Upon a US Supreme Court Ruling

Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, the Chairman of the Committee on Migration of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles raised their concern over the recent US Supreme Court’s ruling on immigration policy.

With a tied vote of 4 to 4, the US Supreme Court blocked the Obama administration’s plan to temporarily protect about 5 million undocumented migrants from deportation.

Archbishop Gomez called for all-inclusive immigration reform. “This is not a matter of politics, it is a matter of defending human rights and protecting human dignity,” he commented. Similarly, Bishop Elizondo reflected that “millions of families will continue to live in fear of deportation and without the immediate ability to improve their lives through education and good jobs.”
