Pope Francis announced yesterday the creation of a new Dicastery to better serve the needs of the most vulnerable, including migrants and refugees, in yet another expression of his strong concern for the protection of people on the move.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development will be “competent in issues regarding migrants, those in need, the sick, the excluded and marginalized, the imprisoned and the unemployed, as well as victims of armed conflict, natural disasters, and all forms of slavery and torture,” the Apostolic letter reads.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, the current President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will be leading the newly established dicastery starting from 1 January 2017.
