Cristina Palazzo is the Deputy Director of Operations. She joined ICMC in 2009.
In her position, Cristina supports and advises the Director of Operations on all aspects of monitoring and strengthening ICMC’s field offices and programmes and its ability to carry out humanitarian actions on behalf of refugees, migrants and other vulnerable populations. She provides strategic guidance to field offices in the development and submission of project proposals and budgets and, in close cooperation with the Director, promotes the enhancement and effectiveness of ICMC’s operational activities in accordance with core humanitarian standards and Catholic Social Teachings.
Cristina began her career with the Italian Council for Refugees (CIR) in southern Italy in 2000-2002, where she combined responsibilities in both monitoring reception conditions of incoming migratory flows and providing legal and social assistance to individual asylum seekers and refugees. She went on cooperating with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), and later took up positions with the Council of Europe, Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
A lawyer by training, Cristina holds a Degree in Law from the University of Catania, School of Law and a Master of Laws (L.L.M.) in International Organizations, International Criminal Law and Crime Prevention jointly awarded by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the University of Turin (Italy).
