On the occasion of the United Nations Summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants to be held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, on 19 September, the Permanent Mission of the Holy See, the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), and Caritas Internationalis will co-host a side event to discuss the role of faith-based organizations in responding to large migrant and refugee movements.

This event offers an important occasion to highlight the extensive engagement of religious leaders and faith-based organizations, based on a centuries-old tradition, to provide migrants and refugees with immediate humanitarian assistance, facilitating resettlement, and promoting integration in new home countries.

From small programs to large and more complex structures, and from grassroots to global levels, these organizations provide professional, rights-based, and person-centered services and advocacy activities to benefit the uprooted people without any discrimination on the basis of racial, ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, or religious origin. In spite of this crucial role, however, religious groups are often left out of political decision-making processes, even though their inclusion could provide a strong contribution to moving beyond “burden sharing” to “responsibility sharing” and finally to “solution sharing”.

The event will be held in Conference Room #11 at the UN Headquarters between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM; please see the attached flyer for a list of high-level panelists and the Media Guide for additional information.

The event is to be live-streamed on the United Nations’ Web TV.
