ICMC-UNHCR Resettlement Deployment SchemeSince 1998, ICMC has been working in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency to provide durable solutions for refugees in the form of resettlement in a new home country. Through the ICMC-UNHCR Resettlement Deployment Scheme, skilled ICMC professionals from a variety of backgrounds work directly with refugee protection operations in the “field”, providing support to UNHCR offices throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East in their efforts to properly identify and refer refugees for resettlement. Depending on the needs of the UNHCR duty station to which deployees are assigned and his/her professional profile, ICMC deployees carry out a variety of tasks related to the identification and referral of refugees, ranging from interviewing individuals to making protection assessments—especially as they may relate to unaccompanied children, women-at-risk or elderly refugees. With a roster of more than 200 resettlement professionals from over 30 countries, the ICMC-UNHCR Resettlement Deployment Scheme allows for an increased exchange of expertise and capacity building between NGOs and UNHCR. The temporary placement of professionals within UNHCR field offices provides deployees from diverse backgrounds an increased understanding of how the UNHCR resettlement programme functions within the context of local and international partnerships. In turn, UNHCR benefits from the experience of people grounded in community work in refugee-receiving countries. Upon completion of their assignment, deployees return to their home communities or NGOs and are able to use their new experiences and insights to increase awareness of international resettlement work, including the participation of NGOs and governments in UNHCR operations. The Resettlement Deployment Scheme is managed in joint partnership between ICMC and UNHCR. Professionals recruited to the programme are contracted directly by ICMC and are deployed to UNHCR field offices. Interested in applying to the ICMC-UNHCR Resettlement Deployment Roster?
